Information for motorcyclists

Making the best use of DB Autozug as a motorcyclist

skip: Making the best use of DB Autozug as a motorcyclist
Information and tips that may help you plan and prepare your biking tour well, with or without combinations.

Motorcyclists appreciate travelling with DB Autozug because it does away with the monotonous journey along motorways to their holiday destinations. It also, moreover, spares them the notorious “square tyres” syndrome that manifests itself after long stretches on motorways and makes negotiating winding roads thereafter so unpleasant (the two legs on the motorway can actually cost a complete set of tyres).

Unlike travel on the motorway, which is one of the least sociable activities imaginable, a tour with DB Autozug begins with motorcyclists making themselves at home in their cabin, patronising the buffet restaurant and generally enjoying their biking tour from start to finish.

Flexible tour planning

Many motorcyclists plan their route differently to motorists, the focus being more on having fun on the road in the country in which they are holidaying. Hence, the place they arrive at is frequently not intended to be the point from which they return. With DB Autozug that’s no problem.

You can, for instance, take a DB Autozug service from Hamburg to Avignon on the Cote d'Azur. You then bike along the Italian riviera to Tuscany, returning with DB Autozug from Verona to Hamburg

Motorcycles and combinations

For the purposes of the service offered by DB AutoZug GmbH, “motorcycle” is taken to mean any motorised two-wheel vehicle as well as motorcycles with sidecars. The overall length - of a motorcycle plus trailer, for instance - must not exceed 2.65 m. Otherwise motor-car prices apply.

Loading and securing motorcycles

Motorcycles are generally loaded ahead of other types of vehicle, since they have to be carefully secured and this is time-consuming. The acceptance deadline for motorcycles is accordingly earlier than that for motor cars - please check the times indicated on your ticket.

In the high season in particular, in which a great many motorcyclists travel with DB Autozug, you are requested to turn up early - before a start is made on loading motorcycles if at all possible - and be supportive at the terminal.

Key notes on the loading and securing processes as well as on accompanying luggage can be found on the applicable pages in this section. Cf. Navigation links.

Securing motorcycles

For your motorcycle to be eligible for carriage it needs to have a main or side stand. Machines are firmly secured by loading staff using special straps. If you offer to help, they will be pleased to accept. Should you be the owner of a fully enclosed machine, you can be a great help by giving the loading staff specialist information on the securing points foreseen by the makers on your motorcycle.

Luggage

Lockable motorcycle panniers or cases can remain attached to your vehicle. Where all other forms of luggage are concerned it is a question of how firmly they are secured - you should also consider the risk of theft. Definitely take any luggage you require during your journey on the train with you - on grounds of safety and security, you will not be able to return to the carrier in the course of the journey.

You will find important notes on accompanying luggage on the applicable page in this section. Cf. Navigation links.
