An area of unspoiled beaches and mysterious mountain regions
skip: An area of unspoiled beaches and mysterious mountain regionsTuscany is one of the most wooded areas of Italy; the interior of over 300 Km of coastline is covered with pine woods and the Mediterranean maquis, the impenetrable growth of holm oak, myrtle, gorse, heather, trailing arbutus and bramble.
Because of geothermal activity, there are hot springs in the area around Lucca through to the southern Maremma. The Apuan Alps mountain range and the Apennines reach heights of up to 2,000 metres.
Throughout Tuscany, a Mediterranean climate prevails with frequent sunshine in Winter. Snow is rare except in the highlands. Spring and Autumn are generally very mild and are often the best time for a journey. Sometimes on the coast, the Libeccio blows which is a very powerful south-west wind.
Midsummer is the best time for a visit to the Maremma and the southern coastal lowlands. Chianti is at its best when the vine leaves have turned to red. Late Autumn and Winter are good for visits to museums and unhurried shopping trips in the towns. No tourist groups block your view of the interesting sights and in the shops and bars you will be served with particular politeness.
The resort life at the beautiful, kilometre long sand beaches of Versilia is thoroughly sophisticated; Nightclubs and Discos alternate with expensive restaurants on the promenade. South of Pisa, resort life becomes casual and familial, while on the rocky cliffs of the Monte Argentario, the rich and powerful are among themselves.
Elba and Giglio are the most popular islands of the Tuscan group of islands with dreamy beaches and excellent diving locations. The DB Autozug terminals at Verona and Alessandria (Piedmont) are the most convenient for your holiday in Tuscany.
