Friuli Venezia Giulia

Discover the dream-like region around Trieste.

skip: Discover the dream-like region around Trieste.
It is here that the Adriatic thrusts to the heart of Europe and brings together in a single area of the Mediterranean the Latin, Germanic and Slavic cultures.

Where does the magic of the towns of Friuli-Venezia Giulia originate with its elegant but somewhat reserved atmosphere which is so different from other towns in Italy? The difference derives from the history of these places: this is where the Celts, the Romans, the Langobarden, the Republic of Venice and the Hapsburgs settled.

If you drive near Trieste, visit the Borgo Teresiano with its straight lines, which remind one of Vienna. Pause for a while to inhale the aromas and atmosphere of the central European café houses, walk again along the streets, which were visited by Joyce and Svevo: Trieste is the centre of the arts and culture in Europe. Or discover the totally Venetian fascination of Udine, from their pedestals, the logo of the lion, the clock tower, allow yourself to be enchanted by the Tiepelo Frescoes in the Archbishops palace and admire its roofs from the perspective of their castles with the view that takes in the whole of Friuli plain up to the mountains.

Historical events, landscapes, languages and dialects. The great variety not only enriches the Friuli Venezia Giulia but also creates a diverse tradition in wine and culinary traits: local recipes, flavours and culinary customs are closely knitted to the homeland, they tell us the tales of the region, in that they introduce us to their kitchen and their development.

The doors of the vineyards and wine cellars are opened to you in the Friuli Vigneto, the Vineyard Garden, in which every year the best white wine in Europe, perhaps even in the world is pressed.

The coastline in Friuli Venezia Giulia is not especially extensive but it encompasses many different aspects of the Adriatic Sea: surroundings and landscapes, which because of their stark contrasts are surprisingly impressive and which change their visual impressions despite being only a few kilometers apart.

This other approach to experience mountains is more natural and immediate and in every way exciting: from nature, to sports and on to the people, with their deep-seated customs and extraordinarily friendly attitudes. The discovery begins with the surrounding itself which is variable and thanks to the historical incidents which have marked the area, provides numerous surprises because it was the meeting points of the Roman, Germanic and Slav peoples: it is all nearby and simple to reach.
