skip: Friends of nature, holiday-makers, connoisseurs, all enjoy the Black ForestThe Black Forest forms the southwest cornerstone of Germany. It stretches about 160 kilometres in length from Pforzheim in the north to Waldshut in the extreme south of Germany. In width, the Black Forest extends barely 20 kilometres in the north and up to 60 kilometres in the south. The highest peak in the Black Forest reaches 1,166 metres (Hornisgrinde) in the north to 1,493 metres (Feldberg) in the south.
In the west, the Black Forest falls steeply to the plain of the upper Rhine down to a height of barely more than 200 metres; in comparison, in the east the descent is gentler in the direction of the Danube and Neckar valleys to a height of 600 metres. Many valleys cut through the undulating mountain ridges of the Black Forest. The westward valleys carry run off water to the Rhine are carved deeply into the cliffs, while the eastward valleys carrying run off water have a softer form and gentler flow. The Black Forest is a first choice holiday resort as much for the active holiday maker and extreme sports person as it is for those seeking peace and quiet recuperation.
