Holidaying in the Provence
Avignon as the start-point for you holiday in the Provence
skip: Avignon as the start-point for you holiday in the ProvenceThe coastline is just made for seaside holiday makers and water sports, but the Provence has lots more to offer. In the interior there are the important historical towns of Orange, Arles and Avignon, added to that some of the most beautiful villages in France which picturesquely snuggle up to hillsides. In the northerly direction, in the Haute Provence, there is the Parc du Luberon, further north the renowned Mount Ventoux.
A true ‘nature’s showcase’ is seen in the lavender blossom which brings the landscape alight from the middle of June to the end of August in a blazing purple.
But also the vineyards dominate the natural scenery - ultimately the Provence belongs to one of the oldest wine growing areas in France. The provincial kitchen is absolutely superb: freshly caught fish, olives, fresh fruit and vegetables, scented herbs and on to truffles with a quality wine from the region. All good reasons for holidaying in the Provence. But did you know that you can cycle around the Luberon on bike tracks without being disturbed by vehicles for 236 kilometres?
You can travel by DB Autozug to Avignon, a lively, young town which is famous for its year-round festivals, the heavily fortified Pope’s Palace and of course the bridge in the nursery rhyme.
