Serfaus, Fiss and Ladis
Threefold holidaying highlights on a high plateau
![]() |
Altogether this particular offer is one of the most diverse and best in the alpine region.
Conscious of their beauty
From Ladis in a westerly direction you pass by the small natural swimming lake “Lake Überwasser” and you are soon able to see the second village on the high plateau laid out in front of you. If Ladis seems a little shy and hidden, Fiss is not at all shy with strangers. Exactly the opposite: for a small village it spreads itself confidently wide, an altogether open and welcoming signal.
Perhaps something new has happened on the edges, but Fiss has remained an ordinary village at its core, Romansh speaking, dressed up and straightforward. As a family village Fiss is signed “Family Village Tyrol” a so called title, which the Tyrol regional government has loaned in view of the quality and diversity of its services and attractions. Hotel and gastronomic services are wholly concentrated on its family customer base.
Below - an underground railway, above - a village
One cannot see the neighbouring village of Serfaus from Fiss. It was said that the small mountain ridge, that distorted the view from here to there, was one reason why the two beautiful sisters seemed for a long time to be farther from each other than New York from Tokyo. But as it so often is with sisters, it is possible that a little jealousy also played a role, Serfaus always displayed a certain smartness in its presentation.
You notice this as you near the village. The road ends here; a car park collects the cars of the day visitors (guests though can drive direct to their accommodation). Whoever wishes to travel further can take the village underground, the only one of its kind in Europe. The main reason Serfaus built this facility was to ensure the village was free of traffic during the winter and be able to remain a village. How well they have achieved this objective you can see as you walk through the village, past old houses and barns and even stables.
The church with its spire in the centre of Serfaus is also witness to the Romansh roots of the village. The sister behind the mountain ridge also holds the certification of “Family Village Tyrol” and carries this through with an excellent offer for families with children.
More than the sum of the parts
Historical villages, every one of them beautiful, have their own heads. This means that while being neighbours and bound by history all the same they do not have much in common. That was also the case on the high plateau. Each village offered their guests the entire diverse package of the shared mountains and tracks which the guests of Serfaus, Fiss or Ladis would take; these were the same, equally the peaks which one climbed. And yet, each village advertised to guests singularly as though each was alone in this wonderful district. That has now changed. Serfaus, Fiss and Ladis have grown into a single holiday resort.
Now, perhaps the most diverse and for quality the best in the whole of Tyrol because all three villages complement each other. The whole is more than the sum of the parts. With first class hiking trails and mountain sports of all description, biking, rafting, canyon exploration, Nordic-walking and riding, whatever the mountains or the vicinity can offer that promises fun and adventure. Some of the best wellness and children’s hotels in the country are here in the region, surrounded by a broad selection of moderately priced accommodation.
The fact that one has, beside these many offers, a free choice between three beautiful villages, each amassing 2,000 hours of sunshine a year, makes the decision for holidaying in Serfaus, Fiss and Ladis, exciting and at the same time pleasant. The best way to travel to this interesting holiday region by DB Autozug is via the terminals at Innsbruck or Munich.
